WPA-Green?

Central CA—Some may remember the WPA, signs of the old work program are all around, but you have to look closely. A lot of cement work, especially older bridges and buildings were stamped with WPA in the 1930’s and ‘40s as lasting reminders of whom and what created the structures.  

WPA is a distant memory for most, something in history books or search engines. It started out as the Works Progress Administration in the early 1930s. By 1939 it was renamed the Work Projects Administration with FDR’s New Deal kicking into high gear.  

The WPA and New Deal put millions back to work during the Great Depression. Political historians have debated the success of the WPA through the years. It is not surprising the discussion has resurfaced as the U.S. struggles from substantial unemployment and sputtering economy.

Some think a version of the WPA is necessary to put Americans back to work. However, this time around instead of constructing bridges and brick buildings the current talk leans “green.” Mayor of Alviston.com Mark Alvis explains:
